Radiatively Inefficient Accretion Flow Models of Sgr A*

چکیده

I review radiatively inefficient accretion flow models for the≈ 2.6×106M black hole (BH) in the Galactic Center. I argue for a ’concordance model’ of Sgr A*: both theory and observations suggest that hot ambient gas around the BH is accreted at a rate ∼ 10−8M yr−1, much less than the canonical Bondi rate. I interpret Chandra observations of Sgr A* in the context of such a model: (1) the extended ’quiescent’ X-ray emission is due to thermal bremsstrahlung from gas in the vicinity of the Bondi accretion radius, and (2) the ∼ 10 second long X-ray flares are due to synchrotron or Inverse-Compton emission by non-thermal electrons accelerated in the inner ∼ 10 Schwarzschild radii of the accretion flow.

The supermassive black hole in the center of our Galaxy, Sgr A*, is unique because the angular size of the black hole is the largest in the sky thus providing detailed boundary conditions on, and much less freedom for, accretion flow models. In this paper I review advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF; another name is radiatively inefficient accretion flow) models for Sgr A*. This includes t...

Constraining Radiatively Inefficient Accretion Flows with Polarization

The low-luminosity black hole Sgr A* provides a testbed for models of Radiatively Inefficient Accretion Flows (RIAFs). Recent sub-millimeter linear polarization measurements of Sgr A* have provided evidence that the electrons in the accretion flow are relativistic over a large range of radii. Here, we show that these high temperatures result in elliptical plasma normal modes. Thus, polarized mi...

Nonthermal Electrons in Radiatively Inefficient Accretion Flow Models of Sagittarius A*

We investigate radiatively inefficient accretion flow models for Sgr A*, the supermassive black hole in our Galactic Center, in light of new observational constraints. Confirmation of linear polarization in the submm emission argues for accretion rates much less than the canonical Bondi rate. We consider models with low accretion rates and calculate the spectra produced by a hybrid electron pop...

Estimating the Parameters of Sgr A*’s Accretion Flow via Millimeter Vlbi

Recent millimeter-VLBI observations of Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) have, for the first time, directly probed distances comparable to the horizon scale of a black hole. This provides unprecedented access to the environment immediately around the horizon of an accreting black hole. We leverage both existing spectral and polarization measurements and our present understanding of accretion theory to pr...

EVIDENCE FOR LOW BLACK HOLE SPIN AND PHYSICALLY MOTIVATED ACCRETION MODELS FROM MILLIMETER-VLBI OBSERVATIONS OF SAGITTARIUS A* Citation

Millimeter very long baseline interferometry (mm-VLBI) provides the novel capacity to probe the emission region of a handful of supermassive black holes on sub-horizon scales. For Sagittarius A∗ (Sgr A∗), the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, this provides access to the region in the immediate vicinity of the horizon. Broderick et al. have already shown that by leveraging ...
